As we pause and reflect during another holiday season, I am still buzzing with the “excitement” generated by our recent, very successful four-week run of Fun Home. As our sage and talented Managing Director, Julie Swenson, says: “There are a handful of productions in a theater professional’s career where everything comes together into an almost perfect package. Fun Home is one of those handful for me.” Well, Julie, it was for me, too. And as I think back on my four and a half years as a Forward Theater board member and all the Forward plays I’ve seen in the almost ten years of Forward’s existence, among all the amazing productions that FTC has brought to the stage, one other is in my handful — Silent Sky. Three years ago, in this very blog, I rewrote the lyrics to a traditional Christmas carol to celebrate its awesomeness to the tune of Silent Night (see December 2015 blog entry). Now, to celebrate Fun Home’s awesomeness, I offer another fractured holiday classic. Sing all, to the tune of Home for the Holidays:
Oh, there’s no place like Fun Home for the holidays
‘Cause no matter how far and wide you roam
When you pine for the power of brilliant plays
For the price of it you can’t beat our Fun Home
I met a gal who came from Chicago and she was headin’ for
Forward Theater and some Broadway Olivo
From ‘cross the country folks were travelin’
Down to Madison’s theater jewel
From Atlantic to Pacific
Gee, the singin’ was terrific
Oh, there’s no place like Fun Home for the holidays
‘Cause no matter how far and wide you roam
If you wanna be happy in a million ways
For us theater folks you can’t beat our Forward home
Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season!
